Kristina Libby grew up as a good girl - doing everything right and following the “rules” of love according to every book, magazine and romcom she came across - but when she loses her soulmate and suffers a brain injury, her life takes an unexpected turn and leads her to ultimately ask the question - “what does it actually cost to be a good girl?”
As Kristina takes us through the events of her life that led up to this, I was instantly struck by how bubbly and warm her personality is. With quite a lot of late attendees to this particular performance, she handled it really well and made it a welcoming environment for everyone in the room - less of a performance, more like joining her to hear her story.
Lighting and sound effects helped with her storytelling throughout the performance, but her friendly and charming demeanour kept the audience invested in her story - a story that is filled with pain, loss and finding new ways to express emotions.
The journey she takes us on is a really unique one and the audience were fully invested - audibly reacting to her stories and revelations - with a really great mix of comedy and emotion throughout. She speaks directly to the audience in a comfortable and inviting way, with eye contact and acknowledgement of people’s reactions. Kristina moves between comedy and heartfelt moments beautifully and I was fully invested in her story.
A large portion of this performance is a story of meeting and losing your soulmate, but underneath that is an overwhelming sense of realising that the ideal relationships and expectations set by TV and magazines growing up were not realistic. Despite all the struggles you’ve been through and how many times you’ve been knocked back, maybe you can rebuild yourself in your new life.
As Kristina tells us about the flower arranging hobby she picked up during lockdown, I didn’t expect to be so moved. As she told us about the impact this had on other people’s lives and, as a result, her own, there was a real sense of connection with other humans and how it helped with her sadness, grief and loneliness. The violinist accompanying her during this performance added another layer to her storytelling and, in this moment, made me quite emotional.
This beautiful show is an important reminder that there’s only one you, so be your authentic self and don’t shrink yourself to fit in or to be loved.
I Almost Died For This?! continues it's run at theSpace on the Mile until 29 August 2026.
