Review: Fantasy World Adventures Mega Park! The Musical

This show needs to come with a warning… you will, for several days afterwards, have the Fantasy World Adventures Mega Park theme stuck in your head for hours...days even!

Not that I’m complaining… I really didn’t know what to expect with this one, but can confirm I really enjoyed it. When the cast burst onto the stage with big, cheesy theme park smiles, singing the Theme Park’s theme tune, I was instantly intrigued as to what was to come next. Starting a show with that much energy is bound to grab an audience’s attention, and it certainly did that for me.

When Teddy’s dad dies, it seems inevitable that Teddy will eventually take over as CEO of the theme park — a role his mother has taken on until he is ready. But that’s not Teddy’s dream. Teddy dreams of becoming the park mascot instead, but doesn’t know how to tell his mother and doesn’t want to let his family down. But an opening for the position is coming up and, when love interest Pippa signs him up to audition, he can’t resist.

On paper, the plot sounds bizarre, but somehow it really works. It’s brought together by a well-structured story, well-thought-out characters, extremely catchy songs… and a very questionably shaped rollercoaster design.

The cast do such a great job of bringing their characters to life — from Jason, the work experience guy, to Barb, who is straight-talking, intimidating… and hilarious, as well as love interest Pippa and confident park designer Charlie. Each character has a clear role within the park, which adds to the world they are creating and helps the story feel much bigger than just Teddy’s journey.

The songs throughout the show are really beautiful. There’s a good mix of ballads and upbeat numbers, and I particularly enjoyed the girl-group-like performance of a song about rollercoasters. It all comes together really well to add layers to the production in a fun yet heartwarming way. You really do find yourself rooting for these characters.

The choreography was also impressive, with quite a large cast taking to the stage, which supported the more upbeat and fun elements of the show really well.

Overall, I really enjoyed this production. There’s definitely room to grow and fine-tune it some more, but this was a fun, hilarious and heartwarming hour at the theatre — and I’ll be trying to get that Theme Park theme tune out of my head for days!
