Written by Morgane Rogers, You Killed My Cat is a new 50-minute play produced by Poor Penny Productions.
The play opens with Mary alone in her kitchen, clearly on edge, when a stranger turns up at her door claiming he’s found her missing cat — or at least part of it.
Although confused and suspicious, she invites him in. As the evening unfolds, we learn a bit more about their lives, mostly Mary’s, while Max remains far less willing to share. It’s clear early on that something isn’t quite right. The script has plenty of twists and turns, keeping you guessing, with humour mixed in throughout.
The cast of two are strong and capture the essence of their characters well. Morgane Rogers’ Mary is unhinged and unpredictable, with strange and impulsive decisions guiding her through the evening. Sean Leacey’s Max feels suspicious and uneasy from the outset, clearly up to something. The awkward moments between the two are particularly effective and feel very natural.
The set remains entirely within Mary’s kitchen, with sound effects used to suggest movement through the rest of the house. This works well overall and helps maintain the uneasy atmosphere of the piece.
While the tension is strong in places, the play doesn’t always sustain its momentum. At its current 50-minute length, some scene changes arrive before moments have fully settled, interrupting the flow just as the tension begins to intensify.
The ending itself is abrupt, which is effective and fitting for the tone of the piece, but because blackouts are also used for scene changes throughout, it takes a moment to register that the play has actually finished.
Overall, You Killed My Cat is a new play with a lot of potential. The concept is strong and it mixes humour with awkwardness, anger, and unhinged moments really well, even if the pacing and structure aren’t always as tight as they could be. There’s a lot to be excited about in this play’s future.
You Killed My Cat played at The Golden Goose Theatre on 2nd and 3rd Feb 2026.
