Review: The Warp and The Weft

Devised and directed by Izzy Ponsford, and performed by Fool Moon Theatre Company, The Warp and The Weft is a beautifully put together 60-minute show that weaves together eight different stories, ranging from mythology to lived experience.

It explores the global impact of textiles, showing how cloth and clothing aren’t just practical items, but carry memory, history, and identity.

Four performers – Sofia Bellada, Mia Kennerson, Sonna Salán and India Walton – bring the stories to life using a mixture of movement, music, and spoken word. They do a really good job of bringing emotion to the piece, making each story feel distinct, whether exploring the art of waulking in the Scottish Highlands, the AIDS Memorial Quilt, the origin of barkcloth – one of the world’s oldest textiles – or the myth of Arachne and Minerva.

What really stood out was how the cast used movement to represent weaving, their bodies capturing the rhythm, flow and technique of it.

The staging is intimate. A large tapestry frame sits at the centre, while pieces of fabric and clothing are laid out in a circle to mark the performance area. These are brought into the storytelling throughout.

Early on, the music slightly drowned out some of the dialogue but it was only for a short period and didn’t affect the overall experience.

After the performance, we were invited to interact with the materials and read more about the stories that had inspired the piece, which added an extra layer of connection.

Overall, it’s an original and thoughtful piece of theatre. If you’re interested in how textiles connect to people and their stories – or in storytelling through movement – it’s worth catching.
