If you’re looking for a relaxing evening out, this show is not for you. BUT, if you’re after some chaos, song, dance and a hilariously wild night out, this is certainly that!
The Meeples have lost their funding, been kicked off TV and are being hunted by ICE. With Sherbit Le Frog back from his solo world tour, they throw a drug-fuelled cabaret and you truly never know what’s going to happen next.
Walking into the space was a bit overwhelming — there’s quite a large cast for such a small theatre, with Meeple characters welcoming you as you walk in, interacting with you as you wait for the show to start and getting everyone in the mood for a fun evening.
And fun it is! It’s incredibly funny, with plenty of impressive dancing and singing to keep you entertained. The dancing in particular was really impressive and the songs were as offensive as you could make them, aided by the wonderful characterisation of the cast and the use of puppetry throughout the performance. The vocals were fantastic and really pull you into the story they are telling.
The cast use the entire stage, sitting in the aisles between audience members at moments during the show and interacting with them. However, due to the size of this studio and the sheer amount of people on stage, it got quite difficult to see what was happening at times. Key moments of the performance took place on the floor, with audience members straining to try to see what was happening, which does take you out of the world they’ve created.
This felt less like a show and more like an experience. It’s wild, inappropriate, offensive and completely hilarious, but if that’s what you’re after, it’s wonderful. You’ll see some characters in there that are suspiciously similar to another group of (more innocent) puppets you may know, which feels a little wrong but also makes the show even funnier to watch.
Wild, hilarious and completely bizarre, this is a show that’s certainly unique and I’m happy I took the chance on it. It’s very enjoyable, but the staging makes it difficult to fully immerse yourself. Definitely a show worth seeing if you’re looking for something different.
The Meeples: XXX continues its run until 29 August 2026 at Greenside @ George Street.
