Written, starring and based on Winnie Stack’s own life, @Jenna is a heartwarming story following her journey of self-discovery as she comes to understand her sexuality.

After finding some old diaries she used growing up, she takes us on a hilarious journey through her life, using a projector to present her diary entries and videos from her childhood to add another level of connection to her story. Her sassy, opinionated (an unexpected) best friend is another surprising element, but it’s wonderfully executed and helps to create the world around her and tell her story.

The 60 minutes absolutely fly by as you go on a journey of discovery together and you never quite know where the story will go next…or what’s going to appear on the screen. Winnie's ability to hold an audience’s attention was clear, and the audience audibly reacting to her stories really added to the feeling that this was less of a performance and more a group of people hanging out listening to a real human tell a really honest and vulnerable story.

I really enjoyed the use of the space during the performance - from telling her story directly to the audience, bringing different characters to life (one in particular is a joy to watch throughout the performance), and using the screen to show us her diary entries. It all came together really well and the audience was fully invested in her story.

But who is Jenna in all this? Well, that would be Jenna Fischer…that’s right, Pam from The Office. A woman she saw on TV and instantly developed a crush on. Using Jenna — and many other influences — Winnie’s story is packed with unfortunate experiences, trying to fit in and ultimately trying to figure out who you are as you navigate the awkward teenage years.

Winnie takes on impersonations of people she’s met along the way, each one with their own clear mannerisms and voices, and each having impacted her life either positively or negatively.

This is a really beautiful, engaging and hilarious telling of something I’m sure a lot of people will relate to. Of course the main story in this show is how Winnie realised that she was attracted to women…but it’s more than that, it’s a story of navigating growing up - wanting to fit in, trying to discover who you truly are without fear of shame from others around you, finding love and self-acceptance…and realising that it’s ok not to lose parts of what made you the person you are as a child, just because you’re supposed to be an adult.

@Jenna continues its run at C ARTS | C venues | C aquila until 30 August at 19:00.
