Chickadee recently played at Riverside Studios as part of their Bite Size Festival, ahead of its upcoming run at the Edinburgh Fringe.

Written and performed by Feride Morçay, this 60-minute one-woman show follows Dahlia — a street clown who just wants to bring joy to a world full of chaos. But when she’s pressured into the spotlight on Chickadee Night Live and becomes an overnight sensation as “Chickadee, the sexy clown,” the fame begins to chip away at who she really is, and her mental health suffers.

Torn between chasing fame and staying true to herself, we learn about her journey — from a young child discovering a love for making people laugh, to the spark that led her to the streets.

Feride is magnetic — she brings a sense of innocence and sincerity to Dahlia that’s really endearing. The performance is full of heart, with the right balance of humour and vulnerability. I found myself being drawn in more and more as the story unfolded.

The set is quite simple but effective in capturing Dahlia’s journey, with blackouts marking the scene changes. The lighting also really stood out to me — capturing the shifting moods and powerfully conveying the weight of Dahlia’s story.

Chickadee is heading to the Edinburgh Fringe from 1–24 August, ZOO Southside.
