The New Rep Company is a repertory theatre group made up of 19 young actors — all graduates of Italia Conti — and each month, they put on a different play at The Golden Goose Theatre.

This was my first time seeing a performance by the company, and I was excited to see what the evening had in store. As usual, I went in knowing almost nothing about the play — just that it was about a family — so I definitely wasn’t prepared for the emotional depth and intense family dynamics that unfolded.

A Long Day’s Journey Into Night is a heavy, intense play, and The New Rep Company captured its raw emotion perfectly. The play follows a day in the life of the Tyrone family, with each member facing their own battles: addiction, illness, guilt.

The four-act play builds slowly, but as the story unfolds, the pressure builds, and you really get a sense of the weight this family is carrying.

The staging was minimal — just a table, with the cast seated around it holding scripts — but it worked really well, allowing you to focus on the characters and the dialogue.

The cast of four actors playing characters, plus a fifth setting the scene for each moment from the script, really delivered a moving and passionate performance. Molly-May Paterson really stood out as Mary — a woman falling apart in front of her helpless family’s eyes — and it was heartbreaking to watch.

Overall, it was a simple but powerful version of a classic play.

Unfortunately, this show has now finished its run — but I’m looking forward to seeing what this talented company has in store next.
